Top ten places to visit in Leicester as a family

The great thing about visiting a new town is that you get to really explore all of the fantastic places you can visit. With the School holidays on the horizon, a trip away to another city is definitely on the cards and being able to stay in a cheap yet decent hotel certainly adds to the appeal.

The Space Centre

This place has something for all ages and it is loads of fun too. Easy to get to and something that can fill your whole day with the added bonus that you know the kids will be learning something even when they think they are just having fun. Rockingham Castle

Rockingham Castle was built under the instruction of William the Conquer and is steeped in history from the Normans all the way through the civil war, medieval times and the Victorians. Add to that the 12 acres of beautiful gardens ranging from manicured rose gardens to a gorgeous wildflower garden it is a dream for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Twinlakes Theme park

Although not well known Twinlakes Theme park is huge with loads to see and do. They also have lots of special events happening particularly during school holidays so it is always worth having a look at their website. Abbey Pumping Station

I don’t know about you but when it comes to toilet humour my kids are fascinated. The Abbey Pumping Station is Leicesters Museum of Science and Technology and contains lots to look at including a fabulous talking toilet, you know the kids will love it.

Conkers

Conkers is a great place to visit no matter what the weather is like. With lots to do both inside and out you will never hear the words “I’m bored” and not only that but entrance is fairly cheap too.

Gorse Hill City Farm

A 20 acre farm just outside the city centre. Gorse Hill City farm is a great place to spend a few hours. With over 100 animals on the farm and the chance to feed them too the kids will love it.

Twycross Zoo

With over 500 animals to look at, a penguin parade plus lots of different feeding times and talks to enjoy you can easily spend a whole day here and if the weather turns you can also head into the soft play area for a while.

Abbey Park

If the sun is shining them head to Abbey Park. This huge park boasts the ruins of an abbey, a boating lake, a river and a pets corner plus victorian gardens and lots of space for a picnic and a run around.

Tropical Birdland

If you love birds then you can’t miss a visit to Tropical Birdland which houses a huge variety of birds. In fact there are over 250 birds here. With a woodland walk, a parrot path and lots of walk through enclosures you will be able to get up close and personal with some of the birds. There is also a play park where the kids can burn off some of their energy.

New Walk Museum and Art Gallery

My kids both love walking around museums and with the new Egypt exhibit coming to the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery this month it is a great time to visit. The also have a fantastic gallery for under 5’s called The Den add to that their dinosaurs and space galleries and the kids will love it.
