Protecting little eyes in the sun

I have to admit that I have never really thought about protecting the girls eyes during the summer time. I mean they both wear hats and sunglasses but these have been bought based on their favourite characters, not any particular UV rating or safety feature.

Did you know that the lenses in Children’s eyes are clearer than adults so they allow light to pass through easier. The World Health Organisation estimates that up to 80% of an individual’s lifetime exposure to UV light will occur before the age of 18 so it is really important to ensure that children’s eye are protected as much as possible.

Optical Express want to raise awareness of how much we should look after our children’s eyes so they sent me two pairs of Kidz Banz sunglasses. All children should wear quality well fitting sunglasses.  Without the UV factor protection carried by the CE mark there is no eye health benefit to wearing sunglasses, so it is really important to check that your children’s sunglasses carry this seal of approval. As well as the KidzBanz glasses Optical Express also sell BabyBanz wraparound style sunglasses suitable for very young children.

Optical Express didn’t just send us these fantastic sunglasses, which allow me to relax knowing the kids eyes are well protecting, they also sent us a voucher for a free family eye test and a £100 voucher to put to use in store. Hopefully, this means I will be able to get a new pair of prescription sunglasses as mine have seen better days.

I will let you know how we get on at our family eye test soon. In the mean time please do think about the sunglasses that your children are wearing this summer and ensure they offer adequate protection against the sun’s harmful rays.
