How to Keep Kids Safe Around Hot Tubs

Hot tubs are a great way for families to relax and bond, but when it comes to children, safety is paramount. The combination of hot water, jets and slippery surfaces can pose a serious risk to children if proper precautions aren’t taken. So, whether you’re using your own hot tub or visiting one as a family, follow this easy guide to help keep your little ones safe!

Hot Tub Safety Tips for Parents

  • Always supervise your child

Perhaps the most important rule when it comes to kids and hot tubs is that all children should be under constant supervision. It is recommended that you stay within arm’s reach of your child at all times, even if they are a strong swimmer or only using the tub for a short period of time.

  • Children under the age of 5 should not use hot tubs

It is recommended that children under the age of 5 should not use hot tubs as their bodies are sensitive to temperature changes. Plus, young children’s skin is delicate and more likely to be irritated by the sanitising chemicals that are used to keep your hot tub clean.

  • Limit hot tub temperatures

If your child is over 5 years old, lower the temperature of your tub to a maximum of 35°C to avoid burns and overheating.

  • Limit soaking time to 10 minutes

Children’s bodies are more sensitive to heat and less able to regulate temperature compared to adults and so long hot tub sessions can increase the risk of overheating, dehydration and even heat stroke in children. For young children, you should limit their soaking time to 10 minutes or less and keep an eye out for signs of overheating like redness, dizziness and restlessness.

  • Encourage your children to stay hydrated

Hot tub sessions can be dehydrating, particularly for young children. Try to make sure your child drinks water before and after using the tub so that they stay properly hydrated.

  • Secure your hot tub cover with child-proof locks

Accidents can happen both in and out of the hot tub, which is why it is essential that you cover and lock the hot tub when it is not in use. Make sure that the cover sits tight against the tub so that there are no gaps a child could slip through.

  • Teach your children clear water safety rules

Before letting your kids get in the hot tub, make sure you have established clear water safety rules and hot tub dos and don’ts, for example:

  • No running around the hot tub
  • No diving or jumping into the hot tub
  • No playing with the water jets
  • No submerging your head underwater for extended periods

Hot tubs can be an enjoyable and relaxing environment for the whole family as long as you prioritise safety, especially when children are involved. By following these tips, you can help to keep your kids safe in and around your hot tub and ensure that your family hot tub bonding goes off without a hitch!
