Top five family things to do at Museums in Manchester

We love visiting museums, they are full of really interesting things to see and do and best of all they are usually free to visit. We spend so much time visiting our favourite museums that I thought I should share my top five things to do as a family at museums in Manchester. Let me know if you can think of any more.

Save the day

Engineer Eric is a very popular character at the Museum of Science and Industry but lately, Fireman Fred has been taking to the Power Hall. Unfortunately, he should be called Forgetful Fred as he needs your help to power up the steam engines before his big test.  The Museum brings learning to life through fantastic live interactive theatre that the children absolutely love. That’s not all though, remember to check out the talking toilet, the experiments gallery and their whats on-page for loads to do. Also, check out our top tips for visiting the Museum of Science and Industry and some exhibits you might not know exist.

Lock your kids in jail

Did you know that Manchester has a Police Museum where you can lock your kids in jail, albeit briefly. The Police Museum is in the City Centre of Manchester and is open on Tuesdays. It is a great place to learn about crime-solving techniques and look at police equipment from through the years. Kids can even dress up in some of the uniform for an authentic experience.

Eat rations for lunch

We love visiting the Imperial War Museum and one of the things that the girls enjoy most is visiting the cafe for lunch for their ration bag. There are always some fantastic family events to enjoy and with lots of hands-on exhibits, craft activities and the big picture show on the wall in the main exhibition space War really is interesting.

Shoot a penalty

The National Football Museum gives visitors the chance to test their skills at Football Plus a fantastic interactive exhibit with seven fantastic chances to test your football skills. You can also find a huge amount of football memorabilia for even the most avid fan to while away the hours.

Go on a nature hunt

The Manchester Museum has a fantastic Nature Discovery zone that is perfect for under 5’s where you can go on a nature hunt with a downloadable ‘I Spy Nature’ book. You can also see a huge variety of animals (both alive and dead) and let us not forget a visit to see the Mummies or the Dinosaurs which are two of my girls favourite exhibits.
