Give up 2 give back #giveup2giveback

Those of you who have traveled with me on the train or walked through London with me will know I have a problem, I am addicted to Starbucks. There is something about their filter coffee that is so much nicer than any other. After I heard of Plan UK’s Give Up 2 Give Back campaign I knew I could help.

One large filter coffee costs just under £2 and when I am travelling I will easily have three, sometimes more. That amount of caffeine is not good for anyone so I am going to give up and only have one Starbucks each day that I am away from home and in return I will give back by sponsoring a child with Plan UK
I like being able to show the girls that giving to those less fortunate is a good thing to do so I sat with them earlier and discussed sponsoring a child. Elizabeth decided that we should sponsor a girl aged 5 – 9 in Africa. I think she feels more affinity with a girl the same age. We were looking at pictures of how they live in Africa and it was making her feel very sad but she is very happy now that we are sending them some money so they can have clean water.

£15 a month sponsorship will make a huge difference to a child in Africa and yet it is such a small amount that wouldn’t really make a difference in our lives. It wouldn’t pay for us to go to the cinema as a family, it wouldn’t pay for us all to have a take out pizza, in fact £15 in the UK doesn’t pay for very much nowadays

Doing this campaign made me realise how such a small amount of money soon adds up and so I have decided to start saving weekly into a rainy day fund. I have set standing orders up for when our Child Tax Credit is paid in, I am paying £5 a week into each of the girls accounts and also putting £20 into a separate savings account. It is amazing to think that within a year that £20 will turn into £1000. It is an amount that I won’t miss on a weekly basis yet it will build up nicely so that if something breaks we should have the money to fix it. I have also started to put away for Christmas already and pay £50 a month into that so should have £500 for Christmas which is great when I have so many nieces and nephews to buy for.

So what do you think you could Give Up? Maybe a chocolate bar a day? a pint of beer a week? or maybe even cutting back on a bottle of wine every two weeks? Just by cutting back on something small you can make such a difference. You can sign up to the Give Up to Give Back scheme on the Plan Uk website

Plan UK work around the world in developing and third world countries to help improve the lives of the world’s poorest children. They do this through building hospitals and schools, installing fresh water supplies and much more, using money provided through child sponsorship.  I can help by not only encouraging people to give up some of the small things in their lives that they could do without and re-invest the money they have saved in making a massive difference to a child’s life through child sponsorship but also by doing this myself after all it only takes£3.50 a week.
