Cadburys Dairy Milk Buttons Owl Cake

I really enjoy baking with my girls but I am not very creative so when I was set the challenge of creating an Owl cake using some ingredients sent to me by Cadburys I decided to give it a go.

Having a recipe card with a picture of the owl cake on it made the whole experience so much easier and I soon set about making the cake batter. The recipe calls for the “creaming” method which I have not done since I was doing my food technology GCSE but it all went well and using the Bourneville chocolate powder gave the cake mix a deep flavour without being too sickly. Check out the recipe below.

Cadburys owl cake Serves between 10 and 12

Ingredients required

200g caster sugar
200g butter or margarine
140g flour (if using plain flour add an extra teaspoon of baking powder)
½ teaspoon baking powder
4 flat tablespoons of Bourneville powder
4 medium eggs

100g Bourneville chocolate
100ml double cream
Small knob of butter

2 Giant Buttons
25g White Chocolate Buttons
25g Dairy Milk Buttons
2 Flakes
Marvellous Mix-Ups for beak and feet

How to make:

Preheat the oven to 180°C fan/160°C. Grease cake tin. Cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Slowly add the eggs, flour, baking powder and cocoa powder. Pour into the tin and bake until a skewer comes out clean when placed in the centre of the cake. Cool fully before decorating.

Melt the chocolate and cream together over simmering water, remove from the heat and add a knob of butter, mix together. Allow to cool until it is thick enough to be spread across the cake.cut out an owl shape. Use the leftover sponge to create two wings and place on either side. Use a Marvellous Mix-Ups for the beak and feet. Break up the flakes and use on the wings, ears and face. To finish add the chocolate buttons to create the belly feathers and to make it look fantastic.

Using the variety of Cadbury’s products allowed me to create a great texture look to the Owl cake and I particularly loved the feathered look using the crushed up Cadbury Flake. Using the two different colour buttons really added to the design and gave the cake that wow factor which means it would be perfect for a birthday cake or as a centrepiece on a table.

Not only did the cake look fantastic but it tasted amazing too and was quickly consumed by all members of the family.

If you are not an overly confident bakery or you have the creativity of a wooden plank don’t worry because you really can create something that looks and tastes amazing as long as you keep it simple and use good quality ingredients.

  1. I definitely have the creativity of a wooden plank and this looks fantastic. I love anything associated with owls, so you never know I might even challenge myself to make one x
